Chapter 6

Brooke fell onto her bed far too wired even to think about sleep. It was the kind of wired where everything in her body was electric, from the feel of her own eyelashes against her eyelids each time she blinked to the way the thoughts zipped through her head, bright and neon and perfect.

Not thoughts. Feelings. A carnival of them. When had she last felt that?

She hadn’t played that way since last summer, when she’d gone home to Nebraska for the Fourth of July weekend and spent it on Lake McConaughy with her high school friends, laughing like she’d never left. It was an effervescence that only happened with summer, but somehow Ridley had made that happen again. Ridley was summer personified—messy dark blond hair, warm skin, lazy smiles.

She climbed off the bed and headed for the mirror, fingers still on her mouth, wondering how long before the feeling of his lips would fade, and if the giddiness would fade with it. She grimaced then laughed at the reflected Brooke laughing back at her, a tousled-hair mess of a woman who had most definitely been kissed. Maybe she should hire Ridley to hang around her office and kiss all the women who came in wanting fillers. She was sporting the look they all paid her to give them.

Except she’d rather keep Ridley’s kisses to herself. Which was stupid. And a pointless way to feel. A few mornings from now she’d be driving away from the hotel and not looking back.

Wait. Wasn’t that the perfect reason to kiss him? To spend a few sun-soaked days being carefree? Getting her “head right,” as her mom would put it? It was the whole “filling her bucket” thing, replenishing her emotional energy so she had more to give the little ones who needed her in Nicaragua. Being down there, doing the surgeries, always rejuvenated her in a way no amount of meditation and yoga could. It was the lead-up to that, the scrounging money and supplies, recruiting doctors, organizing details, that wore her down. She’d need more emotional fuel than what she had in her reserves right now.

Dr. Markmarian wasn’t expecting her back in the office until Wednesday. She’d planned to spend Tuesday after she got back from Seashell Beach working from home on Smiles from the Heart stuff, which meant she had a space in her schedule. So yeah, spending all of Monday here, soaking up a couple more days of Seashell Beach and Ridley, instead of driving home, were exactly what the doctor would order for herself.
